BSU Continues Macroalgae and Water Quality Research in the Black Sea

11 Nov 2025

Batumi State University (BSU) continues its work on MACRO CLEAN Project, focusing on macroalgae research and sustainable environmental solutions along the Black Sea coast.

As part of Project, BSU researchers are monitoring water quality, eutrophication levels, and pollution indicators at seven stations along the Georgian Black Sea coastline: Poti, Tsikhisdziri, Green Cape, Batumi, Gonio, Kvariati, and Sarpi.

In 2025, the team collected and analyzed macroalgae samples from rocky coastal zones to assess ecological status and biodiversity. Findings show high species diversity in Sarpi and Green Cape, with the brown alga Cystoseira barbata identified as a key indicator species. Lower species diversity was observed in Tsikhisdziri.

Research activities will continue through autumn 2025 and early 2026, with the final results to be published upon completion.
